I receive many odd looks when showing this piece of work to individuals. It is strange and unusual and only when you understand the process and development does it become acceptable. Please read through this page to gain insight into the project. The databending process is intellectually planned but randomly controlled for different processes. You will find the animation at the bottom of this page.
Databending is just that - the bending of data. Databending is the name of the process of manipulating data either intellectually or randomly. The process of databending can be done in many different ways.
In order to create a 3D model with the intentions of being realistic and accurate, a lot of research is required. These photographs were my reference to the real object.
My chosen application for all 3D related aspects for this project, at this stage I created the lift using the photographs mentioned above as references. Once I completed the model for the purpose of this project I then use the final 3D Max file in the next process.
It was brought to my attention that if you open a 3DS Max file in 'Photoshop' on a Mac, the data is interpreted incorrectly. I decided to corrupt my final version of the 3DS file. Technically, I have 'databended' my 3DS Max file- the results being very interesting. This image is re-used for many different mediums in the following processes.
I applied the newly databended image to the 3D model as a texture. Essentially, I have mapped the object with a corrupted version of its own data.
I decided to take the databended image of the 3DS Max file and databend this information into a sound file using software which scans an image and converts the data into sound.
With the texture in place and the sound file prepared, I decided to animate the model using modifiers, Properties from the sound file will animate the object via the 'Assign Controller' in 3D Studio Max. This tool connects parts of the sound file to the modifiers and when the sound file is played the pitch/amplitude will animate the selected properties of the modifiers giving the sound complete control over the desired attributes.
